Explain the process whereby Galileo proceeds from the statement that ‘heat is simply motion’ to the non-existence of secondary qualities.

Each student with write a 2-3 page exegetical paper on the following prompt:
“Explain the process whereby Galileo proceeds from the statement that ‘heat is simply motion’ to the non-existence of secondary qualities.”
The paper must have between 3 and 5 direct quotations from the primary source and cited in appropriate MLA formatting. There will be no use of secondary texts for this paper. The use of a secondary source will result in the automatic failure of the assignment.
Students will be graded upon the following:
1. Number of quotations and correct usage of quotations (3 pts)
a. 1/2 point for each quotation
b. 1/2 point for the proper use of the quotation
Do not take the author out of context, be faithful to what the author intended by his words
2. Clarity of exegesis (5 pts)
This is an explanation; do not simply restate what the author wrote.
For this category you will be graded on how well you understand (1) what Galileo is saying and (2) the impact/importance of why he said this.
Clarity involves the structure of your paper, the grammar, and spelling present in the finished product. If I cannot understand what you mean because of unclear sentence structure then I will not be able to tell if you understand what Galileo means either.
3. Proper Citation (2 pts)
Each paper must be properly cited using MLA formatting. This is a cut and dry grade: either it is properly formatted or it is not. Failure to properly cite, and to provide a works cited page will result in the student receiving no more than an 8/10 grade, provided that each of the precious requirements is satisfied in their entirety.
