Reviewing classic research

Reviewing classic research

Part 1: Reviewing classic research You will review some classic social psychology studies. They can be taken from the Aronson text. Each chapter discusses several classic studies. Choose THREE in an area that is of interest to you for further exploration when you choose your problem. You are not limited to the studies in your textbook.

Classic studies are ones conducted more than 25 years ago, and made a significant finding to inform us about social psychology. You are encouraged to look for the original papers reporting the studies where possible, or a good summary of the study from a secondary source. Remember when using textbooks and other secondary sources, it’s a good idea to use multiple sources to gain a complete picture. Again, Wikipedia is not an appropriate reference, but may be a good starting point for finding references. See CAP section for a list of some major classic studies. For each of your chosen classic studies, you will write a brief description and commentary. This should be no more than 1 page for each, maximum 3 pages total. For each, make sure that you answer the following questions: What questions were the researchers trying to answer or what issue were they trying to address? Briefly describe their methods. Did the research involve any experiments? (Hint: look for random assignment and manipulation of an independent variable.) What were the findings of the research? Was this what the researchers were expecting (i.e. were the findings consistent with the researchers’ hypotheses)? Do you think the findings of the research are important? Why or why not? If the research were to be conducted again today, do you think the findings would be the same? Why or why not? Cite the source(s) in APA style from which you got your studies both in-text and as a reference at the end.
